As it so happens, I enjoy acid jazz, ambient, and garage music.
“High Fidelity,” the book and the film, are among my favorites. Moreover, I have read all of Nick Hornby’s books and seen most of the movies based on his work (the one I gave a miss was “Fever Pitch”, despite them changing it to be about the Boston Red Sox).
In my younger days, I felt torn between being a Goth and Industrial fan and my interest in the Rave and Electronica scene. I also have a strong connection to the music of the 1970s and 1980s and enjoyed nights at clubs that featured new wave and disco.
A plotline in the book resonated with me when Laura, Rob Gordon’s girlfriend, suggested a way to help him with his midlife crisis: Dance Music for Old People! It captures the idea of appreciating both new and old music.
Dance Music for Old People includes several past projects. “Retroactive” was meant to showcase remixes and covers of classic songs. “What’s that Sound?” aimed to identify samples and interpolations of those classic songs in modern pop. It took fourteen years to combine these ideas, and DM4OP is the culmination of this effort. Enjoy!
